But What Was Gained

Sufficient to have stood, though free to fall. (III, 96–99)

As I shall thee enlighten; intermix My covenant in the woman’s seed renew’d;

So send them forth, tho’ sorrying, yet in peace (XI, 114–117)

John Milton, Paradise Lost

Caressa Layne’s exhibition of interdisciplinary works explores the foundational narrative of humanity’s first choice. The story of Eve and the apple has become synonymous with temptation and the Fall, but can the story of the first woman be interpreted as the origin of free will? Is change always a bad thing?

This body of jewelry and 2-D work taps into themes of agency, femininity, and potential; asking if rather than condemning Eve for choosing the fruit, we should be thanking her.

Paradise was lost, but what was gained?
